Transferência

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1972, Michel Groisman belongs to that generation of artists who are hard to label. Working across more than one discipline, he has evolved midway between dance and the visual arts. In his performances, the Brazilian stages and questions the status of the body. So with the help of contraptions he has designed himself, Groisman develops dynamic processes generating “normal” and “abnormal” postures. In Transferência, slowly contorting his body with consummate skill, the artist transfers a candle flame from one part of his body to another, creating a delicate movement of fire across his body. Breathtaking.
